Lamb Finishing Workshop held at "Artunga"
Leading Sheep together with the Traprock Group, hosted a practical workshop at Artunga, the home of Traprock president Andrew Clark-Dickson, which focussed on finishing fat lambs to achieve the best prices.
Over 80 people attended and were catered for by Traprock members in support of the local ICPA branch.
Traprock members Peter Reimers and Bruce Toms opened discussions with an overview of their operations, outlining problems they’d faced and opportunities that they had identified.
Two practical sessions followed:
Geoff Duddy from Sheep Solutions had a race full of ewes to refer to, as he emphasised the importance of condition scoring breeding ewes as a necessary tool to ensure good lambing results.
Buyer Joey Brown, in a yard with fat lambs, discussed how best to present lambs in the sale yard to attract buyer’s attention and build your reputation as a producer.
The afternoon forum heard from Pru Barkla, a recipient of a Leading Sheep scholarship & lamb producer at both Cunnamulla & Clifton.
Geoff Duddy then continued the discussion on marketing options such as feedlotting & selling lambs as stores.
Feedback on the day, which was facilitated by Alex Stirton, was excellent.
100% of participants learnt something new and would recommend the workshop to others, 83% intend to make a change to their operation, and overall the value of the day to their business was rated at 8.6 out of 10.
Comments afterwards highlighted that one of the reasons for its success was the willingness of participants to share their experiences. Many of those attending were Traprock members who regularly have workshops to share new material. Comments recognised that it made for a very comfortable environment in which to ask questions and to have frank discussions.
