9 am Dr Anthony Rice

The pressure is on growers to supply perfect looking produce, but as consumers we have the power to choose what we buy. Anthony is focused on reducing chemicals in the food chain. He will speak about our general reliance on chemical insect controls, and how we might do this so much better.

Topics include:

·                  History of pest management and what is IPM 

·                  Insect apocalypse and what is causing it

·                  What beneficial insects look like and how to identify them – the interaction between beneficial insects and plant defence

·                  Biological control

You will be provided with:

1) a booklet covering the outline of the talk

2) a hand lens to look at insects closely and to take home for future use

Dr Anthony Rice holds a PhD in insect ecology from the School of Agriculture, University of Tasmania. He has worked in plant health for the past 25 years, and has operated his own IPM consultancy for the past 10.

Angus will speak on growing tomatoes;

·                  Crop rotation & block setup

·                  Timing of planting & harvest

·                  Nutrition & irrigation requirements

·                  IPM strategies to minimise chemical use

·                  Marketing and market opportunities

·                  Challenges of growing in the shoulder season

The workshop will include time for questions, a hands on opportunity to examine insects, time to have a look at the tomato crop, to pick and take home some tomatoes.
